The drama of the printed hand rendered by means of a non-camera technique conjures many associations: despair, pain and rebellion but also healing, consolation and power. These hands are a self-portrait, yet, in an anthropological sense, they are also a peek into humanity in its cosmic, sacral core.

Intuitive gesture is primordial to this experimental work. On the edge of what can be considered photography, the pieces were created by printing my hand directly on gelatin-based photographic paper with developer or fixer. In a sense, I was working blindfolded as the chemical ooze acted slowly on the suspended silver-halide crystals. Free to touch, brush, crush or slap the matter directly felt like a primal act in a proto-photographic era.
